In-Home Library Service
If you reside in Monroe County and love to read but you’re unable to get to the library, you may qualify for the Outreach Department’s in-home library service for homebound individuals.
“Moving Forward” Reentry Resources
A reentry reference guide maintained by Outreach staff that empowers incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people with essential knowledge and resources to overcome barriers to success arising from arrest and conviction records. Staff also mail a print version to incarcerated individuals by request.
Memory Care Collection
A unique collection of materials for adults living with cognitive decline and their care partners. Items are designed to stimulate, enrich, and bring comfort to people living with Alzheimer’s and related dementias.
Talking Book and Braille Library
A free library service for eligible residents of upstate New York who are unable to use standard print materials due to a visual, physical or reading disability. As a sub lending agency, the Outreach Department provides applications and informational outreach to Monroe County residents and can exchange a patron’s nonworking Digital Book Player for a functioning machine.
Micro Collection Lending Program
The Outreach Department loans micro collections of books, audiobooks, and DVDs free-of-charge to senior living agencies (apartments, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes) in Monroe County for eight-week cycles. Please contact us for more information about the program.
Presentations, Workshops & Tabling
The Outreach Department makes presentations about library services, conducts workshops on using online library services and other technology topics, and participates in tabling fairs that reach underserved adult populations. Please contact us about your organization’s needs.
Corrections Support
The Outreach Department receives County Jail Interinstitutional Aid to purchase educational and recreational reading materials for the Monroe County Jail. Outreach staff collaborate with the Educational Coordinator to provide presentations to incarcerated individuals about library and reentry services.
ONYX Deskset HD Video Magnifier
A desktop document reader and distance viewing camera designed for the visually impaired. May be borrowed by Monroe County libraries, community agencies, or senior living facilities.
About the Outreach Department
The Monroe County Library System (MCLS) Outreach Department brings library resources to under-served members of our community through programs and services. Whether individuals are in their homes, skilled nursing facilities, rehab centers, or institutionalized settings, we deliver the library experience.

Outreach Services are partially funded by Coordinated Outreach Library Services aid from the New York State Education Department, administered by the State Library’s Division of Library Development, and the Friends and Foundation of the Rochester Public Library.
New York State Education Law, §273 (1) (h) (1) defines coordinated outreach as services addressing inequities based on age, skin color, education level, housing status, geographic location, employment status, or disability.
